NJ Gov. Chris Christie's Islamist 'problem' makes him a darling of the left wing media

And another reason to make sure Chris Christie NEVER gets to Washington. Christie defends his Muslim terrorist-supporting Judicial Appointee, “I am proud to have nominated him.”

Liberal rag, THINK PROGRESS reports that this week, considerable attention has been paid to presidential hopeful Herman Cain’s statements – first reported by ThinkProgress — that he would not appoint any Muslims to his cabinet if elected because “I get upset when the Muslims in this country, some of them, try to force their Sharia law onto the rest of us.”

Cain’s ‘Islamophobia’ (Islamorealism) sadly fits into a pattern of conservative attacks on the Muslim faith. In recent months, Rep. Allen West (R-FL), who has said that “Islam is a totalitarian theocratic political ideology,” is now a star within the Republican Party. Rep. Peter King held controversial hearings depicting mainstream Muslim groups as enablers of terrorism. And in 2007, likely GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney reportedly said he would not appoint any Muslims to his national security team if elected president.

But one prominent Republican (not for long) is bucking the trend: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. As ThinkProgress noted earlier this year, Christie appointed Sohail Mohammed to serve on the New Jersey Superior Court. Mohammed is an immigration lawyer who defended many Muslim terrorists caught up in post-Sept. 11 dragnets. Yesterday, Christie was challenged at a town hall about the appointment, and offered a stirring defense:

“If it is disqualifying for the bench to be an Arab-American in New Jersey who represents innocent people terrorists and gets them released, then this isn’t the state I believe it is,” Christie said. “I’ve known this man for 10 years. He’s a good, decent American and New Jerseyan, he’s an outstanding lawyer, and he deserves the opportunity to be on the bench. I am proud to have nominated him.”

When Christie first appointed Mohammed, right-wing reaction was fierce. In a widely linked post, blogger Daniel Greenfield wrote that “New Jersey, the Garden State, has just taken its first step toward becoming the Sharia State,” and criticized Christie for being “willing to stand up to the teacher’s union, but not to the terrorist’s union.” It’s hard to imagine the xenophobic elements on the right will be moved by Christie’s latest rousing defense of his Muslim appointee.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s  stardom has just hit a bump though, as he is under fire for embracing Muslims with Islamist ties.

Pajamas MediaThe controversy began when Governor Christie nominated Sohail Mohammed, the general counsel to the American Muslim Union (AMU), to become a Superior Court judge. The Investigative Project on Terrorism has discovered that the AMU is not a moderate group, as its online newsletter has told

readers that a “Zionist commando orchestrated the 9/11 terrorist attacks.” The group has also supported the Neturei Karta, an Orthodox Jewish group that rejects Israel’s right to exist and supports Hamas and Ahmadinejad. The AMU also declined to support the 2005 “Free Muslims March Against Terror.”

The organization is also very closely tied to the Islamic Center of Passaic County (ICPC), as it has had five common officials. The ICPC was founded by a Hamas operative named Mohammed el-Mezain. In November 1994, el-Mezain boasted of how the ICPC and the Holy Land Foundation, of which he was chairman, were supporting Hamas and how he had raised $1.8 million for it. He was later convicted in 2008 of financing the terrorist group.

The ICPC has had a cozy relationship with groups tied to the Muslim Brotherhood. For example, the former president of the Muslim American Society, Esam Omeish, used to be a chairman of the mosque’s board, according to the website of an MSA chapter. He has called the Muslim Brotherhood “moderate” and admits that he and the MAS have been influenced by them. In 2004, he described the founder of Hamas as “our beloved Sheikh Ahmed Yassin” and has praised Palestinians who knew “that the jihad way is the way to liberate your land.”

The mosque has also brought in speakers like Abdelhaleem Ashqar, who has extensive ties to Hamas but has been acquitted of helping finance the group. Telephone records show Ashqar has been in communication with Hamas officials. He was convicted for refusing to testify before a grand jury about the financing of Hamas in the United States.

Sohail Mohammed has a history of defending Islamists. He steadfastly proclaimed the innocence of Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Sami al-Arian, who he claimed was being victimized by a “politically motivated indictment” and a “witch hunt.” He has also defended the Holy Land Foundation, railed against the depiction of Muslim terrorists on the TV show 24, and protested the use of the term “Islamic militants” in the prosecution of the Fort Dix plotters by Christie’s office when he was the U.S. attorney for the District of N.J.

DRY RUN? Middle Eastern men on United Airlines start fight with flight attendant!

A Portland, Oregon-bound flight made a ‘level two emergency’ stop in Chicago last night after passengers said three men, reportedly of Middle Eastern descent, were acting strangely, even fighting with flight crews.

NBC –At least one of the men walked back to the area of the plane where flight attendants work, laid down and began complaining of illness. That man engaged in “some sort of altercation” with the flight attendant, a passenger said.

At one point another man, who was pacing back and forth in the aisles, also got into a “verbal altercation” with a flight attendant, according to a passenger. Other men of “Middle Eastern descent” were passing notes and “writing in their notebooks,” a source told NBC Chicago.

United contacted officials at O’Hare and alerted them that the flight, which originated in Washington D.C., would stop. The flight was diverted to Chicago. Three passengers were removed from the aircraft, and the remaining passengers were re-screened through security, before being sent on their way.

Passengers arriving at Portland told NBC affiliate KGW they were aware of problems during the flight. Cliff Robinett described the incident as “strange goings on in the back of the plane.” Another passenger, Lydia Omelchenko, said the three individuals removed were “strange people.”

Robinett said the man was lying on the floor in the back of the plane did not speak English, and an interpreter had difficulty translating. Robinett said a doctor on the plane also tried to assist the passenger.

He said three men got off the plane, one of them ill. No one knew what was happening at the time, including TSA officials in Chicago, he said.

Stacy Niedermeyer of Southwest Portland was on the flight and said one of the men went to the back of the plane and “sat down on his bottom.” Some type of heated altercation took place.

Lydia Omelchenko said passengers knew something was amiss and were texting about the incident. She reported that two men, one of them young, left the plane and neither looked ill.

Other passengers interviewed did not wish to be identified. One passenger said a man with a backpack was pacing back and forth and got into an argument with a flight attendant.
