George W.Bush may have had enemies, but he didn’t turn our best allies into enemies. Barack Obama has destroyed the ‘special relationship the U.S. has had with Great Britain and the Brits are saying so publicly.
BRITAIN’S special relationship with the US — forged by Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt in the second world war — no longer exists, says a committee of influential MPs. Instead, America’s relationship with Britain is no more special than with its other allies, according to a report by the Commons foreign affairs committee published today.
BNI says: Obama gave the shaft to our Eastern European allies when he scrapped the missile defense system they had been promised. He didn’t make any friends with French President Sarkozy or German PM Angela Merkel either. He surely didn’t live up to his undeserved status as Nobel Peace Prize winner when he refused to have dinner with the King of Norway, as is the custom. And despite his bowing and groveling to Arab leaders, he isn’t exactly a hero over there either. Quite the contrary, his inability or fear of getting tough on Iran has caused both Egypt and Saudi Arabia to form closer relationships with Israel, whom they trust more than the U.S. to do something about the Iranian threat. And let’s not forget Indonesia, a trip he cancelled, perhaps in part because of all the anti-Obama protests going on over there. China and India think even less of him and snubbed him at the Global Warming conference in Copenhagen. Reports say that his trip to China was a bust, too. I know there are more examples, but this is just off the top of my head.
The report, entitled Global Security: UK-US Relations, says Britain’s relationship with America is “extremely close and valuable” in a number of areas, particularly intelligence co-operation. However, it adds that the use of the phrase special relationship, in its historical sense, “is potentially misleading and we recommend that its use should be avoided”.
“The overuse of the phrase by some politicians and many in the media serves simultaneously to de-value its meaning and to raise unrealistic expectations about the benefits the relationship can deliver to the UK.”
The committee said that the relationship was more associated now with the support Britain gave to President George W Bush over the Iraq war and that US President Barack Obama had taken the same “pragmatic” attitude as it was recommending now since entering the White House in 2009.
It said: “The UK needs to be less deferential and more willing to say no to the US on those issues where the two countries’ interests and values diverge. ”The UK’s relationship should be principally driven by the UK’s national interests within individual policy areas. It needs to be characterised by a hard-headed political approach to the relationship and a realistic sense of the UK’s limits.”
Sir Winston had first coined the phrase during his famous “Iron Curtain” speech in March 1946.He had been inspired by the countries’ shared struggle against Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. And throughout the Cold War, cultural and historical similarities, diplomatic consultation and defence and nuclear co-operation meant that Anglo-American relations were particularly close. BBC

These Palestinian propagandists post fake YouTube videos and perpetuate the lies about their so-called wretched living conditions while the Israel-hating UN chief eats it up.
Foreign visitors to the Gaza Strip, most recently UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon and European Union foreign executive Catherine Ashton, depict its 1.2 million Palestinian inhabitants with great pathos as living in wretched conditions, starving and homeless – and all because of the Israeli embargo. In fact, a new Egyptian report, to which DEBKAfile’s Middle East sources have had access, shows that the one-day observers were hoodwinked or willing to be misled.

The Egyptian authors count more than 1,000 tunnels, some broad enough for loaded trucks, through which a large array of basic and luxury goods flow to the markets and shops of the Palestinian enclave – and have done ever since the end of 2009. The latest hit in Gaza is the new Gold Market, which has been crowded with shoppers for trinkets, ornaments and glittering gifts since it opened.
Yet Ashton, after a day in Gaza, reported: “Moving from Israel into Gaza, you go from a 21st century

country to a landscape that has been disfigured. Rebuilding is impossible while Israelblocks goods from entering. People have little more at their disposal than the ruins that surround them.”
And the UN secretary never tires of demanding that Israeli lift its embargo, as though the Gaza Strip’s plight was unmatched anywhere in the world.
The stage props they witnessed in their fleeting visits were bolstered by the accounts of local UN Works and Relief Agency personnel who have a vested interested in presenting a picture of profound poverty – both to stimulate donations and to justify their jobs. They and the Hamas rulers share an interest in keeping this distorted impression before the world media.

The new Egyptian report finally exposes this fraudulent picture with hard facts and figures.
For instance, the oversupply of building materials has in fact depressed the market price per ton of iron from $1066 in 2008 to $533 in March 2010; cement has dropped even more steeply, from just over a thousand dollars then to $240 today, because of an overabundance.
If the buildings damaged in Israel’s operation Cast Lead in 2009 have not been rebuilt, it is not because of the ineffectual Israel embargo.

In fact, the Hamas rulers make a tidy profit from embargo: They impose duty on every item of goods “imported” via the tunnels which honeycomb the Egyptian-Gazan border area. This revenue not only keeps them in silk ties but also in power.

Their other main source of income is, unbelievably, the 200 million Israeli shekels (app. $50 m), Israel deposits in cash in Gazan banks every month. This income – which provides the oxygen for keeping Gaza’s economy and financial sector afloat – is in fact spent on building more and better tunnels for more high-end goods, in order to further boost Hamas revenues – as well as weapons, which are then used for attacking Israel. The Strip is awash with every type of hardware.

Keeping Gaza’s banks supplied with Israeli currency, an Israeli concession to foreign demand, fuels one of the craziest and destructive cyclical processes ever seen even in this irrational region.

Some of those shekels are spent to upgrade the underground conduits with concrete walls and efficient lighting to resemble European highway tunnels, through which trucks and other vehicles flow. The “tunnel industry” – as it has become – employs 20-25,000 workers.

Because the markets of Gaza are swamped with an enormous variety of cheap luxury items, unavailable in many other Middle East countries, the tunnel managers have recently slowed down the traffic to support prices. As a result, Hamas’ revenue from “import duty” declined by 60 percent in the first two months of 2010.

Taking Islamic law as its guide, leading Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama on Friday issued a fatwa declaring underage marriage acceptable as long as the purpose of the union was to build a happy family.Cholil Nafis, secretary of the committee for religious issues for this past week’s 32nd NU congress, said the gathering had agreed that there should be no age restrictions on marriage because sacred Islamic verses or regulations had not stipulated a minimum age. Cholil said Islamic law only suggested that marriages would be better after a woman had her first period.

“If people disagree with our fatwa, so be it. We never force people to follow what we say.” Cholil said an NU report mentioned underage marriages in some regions, but added that they were mostly traditional engagements between families who wanted their offspring to marry.
Under such a marriage, the minors are wed under Islamic law as if they were adults, but live separately with their families until they are judged mature enough to assume adult responsibilities.
Friday’s edict drew immediate criticism from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI)). “Girls need mental maturity to be responsible for their husband and children,” MUI chairman Amidhan. “Based on the 1974 Law on Marriage, girls can only get married after they are 16.”
Yunahar Ilyas, Muhammadiyah’s fatwa committee chairman, said NU should not issue edicts and recommendations based solely on an Islamic perspective. “They are supposed to see this matter comprehensively. Menstruation is not a measurement of a girl’s maturity,” Yunahar said. “She needs to be mentally and intellectually mature to be able to be a good mother and wife.” INDONESIA THIS DAY

Just weeks after Swiss voters banned minarets in the country, a German anti-Islam group is hoping to use a new European Union law to hold a minaret referendum across the 27 member bloc.
Last month, the Swiss voted to ban minarets. Now, it may be Europe’s turn.
Just a few weeks after Swiss citizens decided in a referendum to ban the further construction of minarets, a right-wing group in Germany is running a similar anti-mosque campaign to gain votes ahead of the state election in May 2010.
According to an article in the German daily Die Welt, the North Rhine-Westphalia group Pro NRW — an outgrowth of the anti-Muslim right-wing group Pro Cologne — hopes to unite other European right-wing associations behind the campaign against Muslim prayer houses.
“We will run a state election campaign that is decidedly critical of Islam. We will use the posters from the Swiss minaret ban,” Markus Wiener, general secretary of Pro NRW, told Die Welt. “We see the construction of 
mosques as an aggressive and powerful symbol of a Muslim conquest,” he added. To be sure, Wiener said the campaign is directed “not specifically against Islam,” but instead at the “problem of non-European immigrants who come from predominantly Islamic cultures.”
Pro NRW is even getting a little help from the Swiss People’s Party (SVP), the masterminds behind the Swiss vote. Wiener says SVP has granted Pro NRW permission to use its posters in the campaign. In addition, SVP politician Andreas Glarner has become a member of Pro NRW.
The right-wing group is hoping force a European Union-wide referendum on the issue.
Pro Cologne staged a 2008 effort to block the construction of a Cologne mosque, which, when completed, will be Germany’s largest. The project was eventually approved. SPIEGEL

Hours ago a South Korean frigate exploded and sank in waters disputed by both Koreas. At last count 58 sailors had been rescued and 40 are missing. The ship, the 1,500-ton Cheonan, had a crew of 104. A naval official confirmed there were deaths.
Apparently the explosion occurred in the lower reaches of the ship, near the stern. The cause at this point is unknown. Seoul has been careful not to attribute responsibility for the sinking.
South Korean officials have confirmed that another of their vessels fired toward the north at a North Korean vessel. Residents on a nearby island reported hearing gunfire lasting about 10 minutes sometime after the Cheonan sank.
What happened? It’s possible that munitions on the Cheonan went off accidentally. Yet the general rule is that there are no coincidences when it comes to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the formal name of the Pyongyang regime.
In this case there was a release of weapons and a sinking in an area claimed by two states still at war. South Korea is not a party to the armistice that ended fighting in the Korean peninsula in 1953, and Pyongyang last May repudiated the truce in any event. The incident occurred near the western sea boundary dividing the two Koreas. Pyongyang does not recognize the Northern Limit Line, the U.N.-drawn maritime boundary where the sinking occurred.
The last deadly sea clash was in 2002, when six South Korean sailors died from North Korean gunfire. Last June a North Koreanpatrol boat entered South Korean waters but was allowed to leave without further incident.
Bottom line, the most likely explanation is that the North Koreans torpedoed the Cheonan.
The waters near the Northern Limit Line are one of the most dangerous places on Earth, yet Seoul’s policies have increased the risk of conflict. How? The South Koreans have a far superior navy, but have understandably tried to avoid conflict by tolerating North Korean incursions. Unfortunately this has emboldened Kim Jong Il to see how far he can go. He will become even more dangerous if North Korea in fact sank the Cheonan and no consequences are imposed on his regime.
Kim, following in the footsteps of his father, the founder of the DPRK, has repeatedly used violence to upset status quos he found unacceptable. With North Korea‘s economy crumbling and social unrest growing–especially since the end of last November when the government demonetized the currency in a botched attempt to regain control of markets--we should not be surprised that Kim has probably staged another deadly confrontation. It is unlikely to be the last one this year.
And the United States should not expect to be immune to Pyongyang’s provocations. After all, Kim Il Sung, the current ruler’s father, authorized the seizure of the Pueblo in international waters in 1968. To obtain the release of crew members who had been brutalized by their captors, the Johnson administration apologized to North Korea. (And now we have a REAL pansy in the White House) The following year, Kim felt emboldened enough to shoot down an unarmed U.S. Navy reconnaissance plane in international airspace, an incident resulting in the largest loss of American servicemen in a single incident during the Cold War. RUSSIA - Well aware that Obama desperately wants to hold in his hand a piece of paper guaranteeing nuclear arms cuts in our time, Moscow has been stalling and brawling to force us to bend to its will.
With a few last sticking points in play (which the White House refuses to make public), the Russian government blindsided US negotiators by announcing that the deal was done and the signing was on the calendar. With their unilateral announcement, the Russians ensured that Obama will cave on the final points — otherwise, it would look as though he scuttled the disarmament deal and undercut his own argument for anti-nuclear sanctions on Iran.
Pakistan - Obama welcomed a Pakistani delegation with orgiastic generosity. The Pakistanis scribbled out the bill, and we whipped out our credit card.
Undercutting every reform effort we’ve made in Afghanistan and setting itself up to be the one entity that profits from our blood sacrifices. Pakistani intelligence (the ISI) has been busting every Taliban member it can’t control to enhance its clout in Afghanistan. And we imagine they’re doing it for us. So we’re speeding up the delivery of more arms and hastening the distribution of 7.5 billion bucks in nonmilitary aid to one of the most corrupt countries on earth. Randomly chosen used-car dealers could do a better job than our gullible diplomats.
The Pakistanis hope to muscle into Kabul in a gangland takeover — and we’re thanking them and paying protection money. They’re laughing so hard they’re spilling the Johnny Walker Blue they guzzle behind closed doors (while preaching Islamic virtue).
ISRAEL - Compared to Obama’s arctic treatment of Benjamin Netanyahu and our Israeli allies, Kim Jong-Il or Hugo Chavez would’ve gotten a warmer White House reception than Bibi did.
Wednesday in Washington was dedicated to shooting down one Israeli compromise offer after another. Of course, we haven’t asked those valiant Palestinian freedom fighters (unfairly considered terrorists by reactionaries like me) to compromise a fraction of an inch. The Palestinians dictate, the ISLAMIC White House obeys.
This is madness. Rewarding terror and intransigence, we’re undercutting the single rule-of-law democracy and defender of human rights in the Middle East. “The rockets’ red glare”? Last time I saw it, the rockets were raining down on civilians in northern Israel. But Obama truly believes that the Palestinians are the good guys.
The Palestinians and their Arab backers have broken their every pledge on the (blind-alley) road to a deal. Time and again, they’ve refused reasonable terms proposed by Israel. They could’ve had a deal under Clinton. They had another chance under W. Each time, the Palestinians walked away. Because they don’t really want peace with Israel. They want Israel destroyed. Either Obama gets it and agrees with them, or he’s naive to an extent that makes Jimmy Carter look jaded.
As far as the trumped-up issue of settlements goes, my Israeli friends are missing a great opportunity: Since Obama’s supporters insist on a history-based Palestinian right of return to Jerusalem, Jews should demand their historical right to resettlement in the Saudi-occupied city of Medina — where their once-prosperous presence is documented by the Koran.
The ultimate travesty, of course, is that the Obama administration will spin each of Wednesday’s triple-whammy debacles as a triumph. It showed those wicked Israelis who’s boss; it gave treacherous Pakistanis all they demanded, and it got tricked by Russia into further weakening our strategic defenses.
This isn’t a pattern of failure. It’s a surrender cult.

The chief was addressing a crowd of about 150 City Hall officials and members of the building trades and was one of several speakers discussing the $412 million bond to seismically retrofit a number of city buildings, including moving some Police Department functions out of the decrepit Hall of Justice and into a new Mission Bay facility.
Despite some reports to the contrary from those in attendance, Gascón on Thursday said he never referred to Middle Easterners or Arab Americans. He said he instead singled out those from Yemen and Afghanistan as posing potential terrorism risks – especially in an iconic city like San Francisco with large numbers of residents from those countries.
(He SHOULD have just said “Muslims” instead, because not all Arabs are Muslims)

He said. “The reality is this is the area where we’re seeing most of the international terrorism coming from. … I think certainly in this case, people are reading too much into it.”
He gave no specific examples of threats to San Francisco, but did point to the attempted bombing on Christmas Day of a Detroit-bound airplane by a man allegedly trained by an al Qaeda offshoot in Yemen.
Ali Altaha, a member of the Arab American Chamber of Commerce who owns a small engineering firm in the city and was at the breakfast at the Ferry Building’s MarketBar, said the chief should be fired.
“He basically said there’s a large Arab American community in the Bay Area, a lot of Muslims, and because of terrorism, they need to be very careful,” Altaha recalled. (Yeah, and what’s wrong with that?) “It was very degrading, very inappropriate for a city official to make comments in this manner. … I felt he was trying to sell terrorism as a commodity to justify his position or funding for his department.” (No, he is selling terrorism because Muslim are perpetrating it wherever they are)
Altaha, who moved from his native Iraq 30 years ago, said he tried to speak with the chief outside afterward. ”I was expecting him to make an apology,” Altaha said, noting that didn’t happen. “He was very aggressive and very cocky about it.” (Too bad, go back to Iraq) SF GATE

The FBI and Homeland Security are presently investigating a series of emails sent by a Dallas-area Muslim, Javid Kamal, to Kansas legislators over the past month. Legislators in other states have also received emails.
What has investigators concerned is that the last email dated March 21st from Kamal appears to be a “final call to Islam” that under Islamic law is necessary before waging jihad against non-Muslims. Kamal explicitly states that this was his “final call”:
This is perhaps my last email to Senators, House of Representatives/Delegates/Assembly and Staff Members of United States of America unless compelled by any people.
A former FBI counter-terrorism agent who was asked to analyze Kamal’s emails stated:
This is a significant danger because of the requirement in Islam to invite (“Dawah” in Islam) non-Muslims to Islam prior to an attack (“Jihad” in Islam). It is my professional opinion that this direct Dawah to the entire Kansas legislature and the emphasis that Monday’s email is Javid Kamal’s “final” email inviting them to Islam, is a direct threat to the Kansas legislature and others to which Kamal communicated, and is a prelude to a jihadi attack.
Oh, did I forget to mention that when the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) went to Kamal’s workplace earlier this week to question him about the emails, they discovered that not only was Javid Kamal not at work, nor could he be located, but also no one, including his family, knows his whereabouts?
