Radical Islamic preacher Abu Qatada has won $3,500 compensation from the European Court of Human Rights for his detention without trial in the UK.
The ruling was made by judges at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg who said Qatada’s detention without trial in the UK under anti-terrorism powers breached his human rights. It comes a day after the Law Lords ruled Qatada – once described as Osama bin Laden’s right-hand-man in Europe – could be deported to Jordan where he faces terror charges.

UK Anti-terror code ‘would alientate most Muslims: Draft strategy brands thousands as extremists.
The government is considering plans that would lead to thousands more British Muslims being branded as extremists, the Guardian has learned. The proposals are in a counterterrorism strategy which ministers and security officials are drawing up that is due to be unveiled next month.
Some say the plans would see views held by most Muslims in Britain being classed by the government as extreme.
According to a draft of the strategy, Contest 2 as it is known in Whitehall, people would be considered as extremists if:
• They advocate a caliphate, a pan-Islamic state encompassing many countries.
• They promote Sharia law.
• They believe in jihad, or armed resistance, anywhere in the world. This would include armed resistance by Palestinians against the Israeli military.
• They argue that Islam bans homosexuality and that it is a sin against Allah.
• They fail to condemn the killing of British soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Contest 2 would widen the definition of extremists to those who hold views that clash with what the government defines as shared British values.Those who advocate the wider definition say hardline Islamist interpretation of the Qur’an leads to views that are the root cause of the terrorism threat Britain faces. But opponents say the strategy would brand the vast majority of British Muslims as extremists and alienate them even further.
The Guardian has also learned of a separate secret Whitehall counterterrorism report advocating widening the definition of who is considered extremist. Not all in Whitehall agree with the proposals and one official source said plans to widen the definition were “incendiary” and could alienate Muslims, whose support in the counterterrorism effort is needed. There were also fears it could aid the far right.
Those considered extreme would not be targeted by the criminal law, but would be sidelined and denied public funds. Ed Husain, of the Quilliam Foundation thinktank, said the root causes of terrorism were extremist views, even if those advocating the views did not call for violence.

American officials have privately backed Pakistan’s “Sharia law for peace” deal with Taliban militants in the Swat Valley despite publicly criticizing it as a “negative development”.
The deal, under which Sharia law will be introduced in the Malakhand and Kohistan districts of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province if Taliban militants end their armed campaign in the Swat Valley, has been met with alarm by Nato chiefs and British and American officials.
Nato fears the deal would create a new “safe haven” for extremists.
“I talked to people from Swat and they were, frankly, quite terrified. Swat has really deeply affected the people of Pakistan, not just in Peshawar but in Lahore and Islamabad,” he said, while a Defense Department official described the deal as a “negative development”.
US officials in Islamabad privately backed the deal as an attempt to drive a wedge between Swat’s Taliban, which is focused on its demand for Sharia law, and the al-Qaeda-linked Taliban led by Baitullah Mehsud, the notorious commander who controls much of North and South Waziristan and other tribal areas along the Afghan border. They expressed fears that the deal might yet be sabotaged by some Swat Taliban militants who support al-Qaeda.

The Geo TV reporter, Musa Khan Khel, was covering the rally organised by extremist group Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) in Matta, Swat when he was shot dead by unidentified gunmen.

When diplomats meet at the United Nations in Geneva on Monday to continue hammering out plans for an international conference on racism in the spring, representatives of theUnited States will take part for the first time in years. The major policy shift, announced by the State Department over the weekend, is the strongest indication yet that the Obama administration could end up participating in the Durban Review Conference, also known as “Durban II.”
Doing so would undercut a campaign calling on democracies to boycott the event, which opponents say will be used by Islamic states and their allies to attack Israel, undermine Western counter-terrorism initiatives and endanger free speech.
A decision to stay away by President Obama would provide cover for other Western countries to do so; U.S. attendance, conversely, is expected to have the opposite effect. Currently Israel and Canada alone have formally announced they will not take part.
U.S. representatives attending the Feb. 16-19 inter-governmental working group discussions will be confronted by a draft agenda that equates Israeli policies and actions with those of apartheid South Africa, and revisits the U.N.’s controversial “Zionism is racism” resolution by highlighting what the drafters call “a racially-based law of return.”
They will also be met by references to racism impacting on counter-terrorism efforts, and calls for governments to act against “negative stereotyping of religions and defamation of religious personalities, holy books, scriptures and symbols.”

Anne Bayefsky, editor of Eye on the U.N., a project of the Hudson Institute, said Obama’s decision to take part in the preparatory discussions “sends a terrible signal.” “Durban II is a cover for an assault on free speech, the demonization of the Jewish state, and an effort to undermine anti-terrorism activities by labeling them all racist,” she said.
“Everyone knows that the agreed purpose of Durban II is to implement Durban I’s Declaration which criticizes only one country on the planet – demonizing Israel as guilty of racism. “The United States cannot change that agenda. It can only legitimize it – which is exactly what U.S. participation now does,” she said. “Evidently, this reincarnation of ‘Zionism is racism’ is not a problem for President Obama.”
